Apex locators and traditional radiographs showed similar effectiveness in determining root canal working length in general dental practice. Further large-scale trials are needed to confirm these findings.

Area of Science:

  • Endodontics
  • Dental Technology

Background:

  • Accurate working length determination is crucial for successful root canal treatment.
  • Traditional periapical radiographs have been the standard for assessing working length.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of electronic apex locators versus conventional radiographs for determining root canal working length in general dental settings.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted in general dental practices.
  • Root canal treatments utilized either an apex locator (AL) or periapical radiographs (PA) for working length determination.
  • Master cone acceptability on pre-obturation radiographs served as the primary outcome measure.

  • Twenty-one of 23 (91.3%) root canal fillings were acceptable in the apex locator group.
  • Seventeen of 23 (73.9%) root canal fillings were acceptable in the periapical radiograph group.
  • The difference in acceptability between the two groups was not statistically significant.
  • Conclusions:

    • Apex locators, when used with a master cone radiograph, demonstrated comparable effectiveness to conventional radiography for working length determination in general dental practice.
    • Larger clinical trials are recommended to further validate these findings and explore the potential benefits of apex locators.
