Summary
Samarium-153 lexidronam (EDTMP) is used for bone metastases pain. This study measured (153)Sm-EDTMP accumulation in malignant ascites, finding minimal levels, which is important for nuclear medicine practitioners.
Area of Science:
- Nuclear Medicine
- Oncology
- Radiopharmaceutical Therapy
Background:
- Samarium-153 lexidronam ((153)Sm-EDTMP) is a radiopharmaceutical for palliative care of bone pain from metastatic disease.
- Malignant ascites is a common complication in patients with advanced cancer.
Observation:
- A patient with extensive osseous metastases and malignant ascites was treated with (153)Sm-EDTMP.
- No prior data existed on (153)Sm-EDTMP accumulation in ascites fluid.
Findings:
- The ratio of (153)Sm-EDTMP activity in 1.71 L of peritoneal fluid to the injected dose was measured.
- The measured ratio was 0.01%, indicating minimal accumulation in the ascites fluid.
Implications:
- This is the first published measurement of (153)Sm-EDTMP accumulation in peritoneal fluid.
- Findings are relevant for nuclear medicine professionals managing cancer patients with ascites receiving (153)Sm-EDTMP therapy.

Ascites
DefinitionAscites is the buildup of fluid inside the peritoneal cavity. It occurs when fluid moves out of the vascular system faster than the peritoneal lymphatics can remove it. This fluid shift is most commonly seen in liver cirrhosis but can also appear in several other systemic disorders.EtiologyCirrhosis remains the leading cause of ascites. Other conditions that can contribute include:Heart failureConstrictive pericarditisAbdominal cancersNephrotic syndromeSevere protein–calorie...
Appendicitis
Appendicitis is an acute inflammatory condition of the vermiform appendix, most commonly caused by obstruction of its lumen. The appendix is a narrow, blind-ended pouch that extends from the cecum, making it particularly prone to obstruction. Causes include fecaliths, lymphoid hyperplasia (often after viral infections), parasites, tumors, or foreign bodies. This obstruction initiates a cascade of pathological changes.Luminal Obstruction and Early InflammationAfter obstruction, normal mucosal...
