  • Wheat allergy is common in Meniere's disease (MD) patients.
  • Wheat gluten is implicated in celiac disease, IgE hypersensitivity, and gluten sensitivity.
  • The role of wheat proteins in MD pathogenesis is under investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of gliadin prick test reactivity in Meniere's disease patients.
  • To assess the association between wheat sensitivity and Meniere's disease.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective case-control study.
  • Skin prick testing with gliadin was performed on 58 adult MD patients, 25 healthy controls, and 25 patients with grass pollen rhinoconjunctivitis.

  • 56.9% (33/58) of MD patients showed gliadin sensitivity.
  • Positive prick tests occurred at various intervals, indicating delayed hypersensitivity.
  • Controls did not show significant gliadin reactivity (implied).

  • This study is the first to report gliadin skin test responses in Meniere's disease patients.
  • A significant portion of MD patients exhibit sensitivity to wheat gliadin.
