Background:

  • Poor healing can lead to adverse clinical outcomes.
  • A novel anti-protease compound, polyhydrated-ionogen (PHI) Mg(2+)/Br(-), shows promise in dermal wound healing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of PHI Mg(2+)/Br(-) in promoting sinonasal remucosalization.
  • To evaluate the impact of PHI Mg(2+)/Br(-) on ciliated mucosa regeneration after surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Bilateral medial-wall maxillary mucosal stripping was performed on 24 rabbits.
  • One side was treated daily with normal saline (NS), the other with PHI Mg(2+)/Br(-).
  • Remucosalization was assessed after 14 days using H&E staining and immunohistochemistry for β-tubulin.

Main Results:

  • PHI Mg(2+)/Br(-) treated sinuses showed significantly improved ciliation (>60%) compared to NS (<30%).
  • Statistical analysis confirmed the significant enhancement of ciliation with PHI Mg(2+)/Br(-) (p < 0.01).
  • Results were corroborated by Type IV β-tubulin staining (p < 0.01).

Conclusions:

  • PHI Mg(2+)/Br(-) irrigation significantly enhances ciliated remucosalization in a rabbit model.
  • This finding suggests PHI Mg(2+)/Br(-) as a potential therapeutic agent for improving postsurgical sinonasal healing.
  • Enhanced mucosal healing may lead to improved clinical outcomes following sinonasal surgery.
