Urologists frequently perform fluoroscopy-guided procedures but often neglect radiation protection. Most do not use dosimeters or protective gear due to practicality concerns, increasing radiation exposure risks.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Medical Physics
- Radiation Safety
Background:
- Fluoroscopy-guided endourological procedures are common in urology.
- Radiation exposure is a significant risk for healthcare professionals during these procedures.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate urologists' attitudes and behaviors regarding radiation protection during fluoroscopy-guided procedures.
- To identify barriers to the use of radiation protection devices.
Main Methods:
- A questionnaire was emailed to 1,482 urologists in Turkey.
- The survey assessed demographics, radiation exposure, and use of dosimeters and protective clothing.
- Reasons for non-use of protective measures were investigated.
Main Results:
- A 26.58% response rate was achieved, with 363 completed questionnaires.
- 84.58% of urologists were exposed to ionizing radiation.
- Despite high use of lead aprons (75.24%), most urologists did not use dosimeters (73.94%), eyeglasses (76.95%), or gloves (66.67%).
Conclusions:
- There is a significant underutilization of radiation protection devices and dosimeters among urologists in Turkey.
- Lack of practicality and ergonomics were cited as primary reasons for non-compliance.
- Findings underscore the need for improved radiation safety protocols in endourological procedures.
