Cell Lines01:16

Cell Lines

A cell line is a population of cells grown in vitro that can be subcultured over several generations. Normal cells cease to divide after a certain number of cell divisions, a process known as replicative senescence. This number, called the Hayflick limit, was conceptualized by Leonard Hayflick in 1961 when he observed that fetal cells grown in culture could only divide 40-60 times. This limit is due to the shortening of the telomeres during each round of cell division, preventing cell division...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Developing insect cell lines is usually routine, but challenges exist for specific cell types and species like the honey bee. Further research into insect physiology and nutrition may overcome these limitations.

Area of Science:

  • Entomology
  • Cell Biology
  • Biotechnology

Background:

  • Insect cell culture is a valuable tool in biological research.
  • The development of new insect cell lines has advanced significantly with improved media availability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discuss the general routine of insect cell line development.
  • To highlight challenges and exceptions in establishing cell lines from specific insect tissues and species.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on insect cell culture techniques.
  • Analysis of factors contributing to successful and unsuccessful cell line establishment.

Main Results:

  • Insect cell line development is generally routine, but difficulties arise with certain cell types (e.g., fat body, midgut) and species (e.g., honey bee).
  • Terminal differentiation and unknown physiological factors can impede cell line establishment.

Conclusions:

  • While many insect cell lines are readily developed, specific tissues and species present unique challenges.
  • Continued research into insect physiology and nutrition is crucial for overcoming limitations in insect cell culture.
  • The baculovirus expression vector system has significantly advanced the field of insect cell culture.
