Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Thoracic Surgery

Background:

  • Soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is a rare malignancy with significant metastatic potential.
  • The lungs are the most frequent site of metastasis for STS, impacting patient prognosis.
  • Current treatments offer limited survival benefits for patients with metastatic STS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discuss the management of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) with lung metastases.
  • To highlight the role of pulmonary metastasectomy (PM) as a potentially curative option.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current literature and clinical practice guidelines for STS management.
  • Discussion of surgical techniques and patient selection for pulmonary metastasectomy.

Main Results:

  • Pulmonary metastasectomy (PM) is the only potentially curative treatment for STS lung metastases.
  • Multidisciplinary treatment, including PM, offers a median survival of 12-14 months for metastatic disease.

Conclusions:

  • Pulmonary metastasectomy (PM) is a critical intervention for selected patients with STS and lung metastases.
  • Optimizing the management of STS lung metastases through PM can improve long-term survival.
