Summary

Quaternary didecyl-dimethyl ammonium compounds (DDAC) did not cause significant histological changes in rat peritoneum compared to physiological solution. This suggests DDAC is safe for peritoneal washing in preventing peritoneal infections.

Background:

  • Peritoneal lavage is used for infections, but the effects of detergents like quaternary didecyl-dimethyl ammonium compounds (DDAC) are unknown.
  • DDAC is used for sterilizing surgical materials.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine histological changes in rat peritoneum after exposure to physiological solution or DDAC.
  • Investigate inflammation, fibrosis, and new vessel formation.

Main Methods:

  • Determined minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of DDAC for E. coli and E. faecalis.
  • Administered physiological solution or DDAC (at MIC) to Wistar rats.
  • Collected peritoneal tissue at 2, 7, 14, and 21 days for histological analysis.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in inflammation, fibrosis, or new vessel formation between physiological solution and DDAC groups over 21 days.
  • A transient increase in inflammation was observed at day 2 in the group treated with DDAC for E. faecalis, which resolved.

Conclusions:

  • Physiological solution and DDAC did not induce significant long-term histological differences in the rat peritoneum.
  • DDAC appears to be safe for peritoneal application in the context of surgical sterilization.
