Summary

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers a new way to non-destructively measure early tooth demineralization. This advanced imaging can detect subtle changes in enamel, aiding in monitoring tooth decay and evaluating treatments.

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Optics
  • Dental Research
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • Nondestructive methods are crucial for monitoring incipient caries and evaluating anti-caries treatments.
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) shows promise for in vivo imaging of early enamel demineralization due to its high resolution and ability to assess surface topography.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the earliest stage at which significant differences in demineralization severity can be detected using OCT.
  • To assess the utility of cross-polarization OCT for the nondestructive evaluation of early demineralization in bovine enamel.

Main Methods:

  • A simulated caries model was used to induce demineralization in bovine enamel.
  • Automated analysis methods were employed to measure lesion depth and integrated reflectivity using cross-polarization OCT.

Main Results:

  • Significant differences in lesion depth and integrated reflectivity were detected after only a few hours of demineralization.
  • Cross-polarization OCT demonstrated sensitivity in detecting early-stage demineralization.

Conclusions:

  • Cross-polarization OCT is a highly suitable technique for the early, nondestructive assessment of tooth demineralization.
  • This method can aid in monitoring caries progression and evaluating the efficacy of anti-caries interventions.
