Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the sterilization effectiveness of Ethylene Oxide (ETO) gas versus hydrogen peroxide-based Sterrad systems for bone pencils.
  • To determine if newer sterilization methods meet established safety and efficacy standards.

Main Methods:

  • A standardized number of bone pencils were subjected to both Ethylene Oxide (ETO) and Sterrad sterilization.
  • Three batches, each containing 13 bone pencils per sterilization group, were utilized.
  • Post-sterilization cultures were performed at 24 and 48-hour intervals.

Main Results:

  • No microbial growth was observed on any culture plates for either sterilization method.
  • Both Ethylene Oxide (ETO) and Sterrad sterilization proved effective in eliminating microbial contamination.

Conclusions:

  • Bone pencils can be reliably sterilized using both traditional Ethylene Oxide (ETO) gas and newer hydrogen peroxide-based Sterrad systems.
  • Newer sterilization technologies provide comparable efficacy to older methods for bone pencil sterilization.
  • The study supports the use of modern sterilization equipment for surgical instruments like bone pencils.
