Insights
Doppler sonography effectively screens for carotid artery stenosis, aiding early diagnosis and treatment of stroke in atherosclerosis patients. This non-invasive method guides vascular interventions and improves patient outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Vascular Surgery
- Diagnostic Imaging
- Neurology
Background:
- Atherosclerosis frequently leads to major stroke, often due to carotid artery stenosis or thrombosis.
- Early detection and management of carotid artery pathology are crucial for stroke prevention.
- Non-invasive diagnostic methods are essential for screening carotid artery disease.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate Doppler sonography's diagnostic accuracy for carotid artery pathology.
- To assess its utility in evaluating extra-cranial and intracranial hemodynamics.
- To define its role in guiding vascular reconstructions and monitoring post-operative outcomes.
Main Methods:
- Doppler sonography was employed as the primary non-invasive screening tool.
- The study focused on assessing stenotic processes within the carotid arteries.
- Hemodynamic parameters, both extra-cranial and intracranial, were analyzed.
Main Results:
- Doppler sonography demonstrated significant diagnostic capabilities for carotid artery stenosis.
- The method effectively assessed hemodynamic changes related to carotid pathology.
- It provided valuable information for determining the need for and outcomes of vascular reconstructions.
Conclusions:
- Doppler sonography is a reliable non-invasive method for early screening of carotid artery stenosis.
- It plays a vital role in the comprehensive management of carotid artery disease.
- Its application aids in optimizing treatment strategies and improving stroke prevention in at-risk patients.
Abstract:
Major stroke is a relatively common cause of death or disabling invalidism in patients with atherosclerosis. In a large percentage of cases it is caused by stenotic/thrombotic processes in carotid arteries and this emphasizes the importance of the problem of early diagnosis and treatment of carotid pathology. Recently Doppler sonography has become a leading non-invasive method of early screening of stenotic processes in carotid arteries. The aim of the present study was to ascertain the diagnostic abilities of Doppler sonography for screening of carotid pathology, assessment of extra-cranial and intracranial hemodynamics, defining of indications, and control of vascular reconstructions of carotids.
