Anger/irritability symptoms (AIS) in oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) may indicate a more severe condition. Differences in symptoms and risk factors depend on who reports them and the child's age.
Area of Science:
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Developmental Psychology
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a common childhood behavioral disorder.
- Anger/irritability symptoms (AIS) are a key diagnostic feature of ODD.
- Understanding the correlates of AIS is crucial for effective intervention.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate risk factors and co-occurring symptoms associated with mother-reported versus teacher-reported AIS in ODD.
- To compare youth with AIS to those with noncompliant ODD symptoms (NS) and clinic controls.
Main Methods:
- A clinic-based sample of 1,160 youth aged 6-18 years was assessed.
- Mothers and teachers completed background history and symptom checklists (DSM-IV).
- Youth meeting AIS criteria were compared to NS ODD youth and clinic controls.
Main Results:
- Youth with AIS exhibited higher anxiety, mood, and conduct disorder symptoms compared to NS youth.
- Informant (mother vs. teacher) and youth age influenced observed symptom differences.
- Developmental, psychosocial, and psychiatric correlates varied based on informant and age.
Conclusions:
- AIS may represent a more severe and distinct clinical phenotype of ODD.
- The reporting source (informant) and the child's age are critical factors in assessing ODD.
- Further research is needed to clarify the clinical implications of informant and age variations.
