Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System01:26

Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System

At the different levels of the healthcare system, we see varying methods of healthcare used. These methods include managed care systems, case management, and primary healthcare.
Managed Care System:
The managed care system is designed to control the cost while maintaining the quality of care. The patient's care from admission to discharge is planned by the primary care provider or the case manager, also known as the gatekeeper. In a managed care system, the number of care providers is limited...

Methods of Documentation VI: Case Management Model

The case management model is a multidisciplinary approach that involves healthcare professionals from diverse disciplines, such as physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, and pharmacists, working collaboratively to address the various needs of patients. Each healthcare professional brings unique expertise and perspectives, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the patient's condition and tailoring treatment plans accordingly.
For example, a patient with a chronic illness...
Preventive Healthcare Services01:30

Preventive Healthcare Services

Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:
Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures01:22

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...
Methods of Documentation II: POMR01:26

Methods of Documentation II: POMR

The Problem-Oriented Medical Record (POMR) revolutionized medical record-keeping by introducing a systematic approach focusing on the patient's problems rather than merely listing symptoms. Dr. Lawrence Weed's introduction of this method in the 1960s marked a significant advancement in medical documentation. The POMR framework consists of four key components: the database, problem list, plan of care, and progress notes.
Kidney Transplant III: Nursing Management01:16

Kidney Transplant III: Nursing Management

Postoperative Nursing Management for Kidney Transplant PatientsPostoperative nursing management care includes monitoring the surgical site, encouraging early movement, and promoting lung health through breathing exercises. Nurses also administer prescribed medications like H2-blockers, such as famotidine, or proton pump inhibitors, like omeprazole, to help prevent gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding. Fungal infections in the mouth and bladder can result from immunosuppressive and antibiotic...

Summary

Text message appointment reminders are the most cost-effective way to reduce patient no-shows and improve healthcare efficiency. While telephone and mail reminders also help, text messaging offers the best financial benefit.

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Healthcare Management
  • Patient Adherence

Background:

  • Patient non-attendance negatively impacts clinic productivity, efficiency, healthcare access, and costs.
  • Effective strategies are needed to reduce outpatient no-shows.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review interventions for reducing outpatient non-attendance.
  • To compare the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of different reminder methods.
  • To identify strategies providing net financial benefit.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of English language literature from November 1999 to November 2009.
  • Comparison of telephone, mail, text/short message service (SMS), electronic mail, and open-access scheduling.
  • Analysis of impact on attendance rates and financial benefit.

Main Results:

  • Telephone, mail, and text message service interventions showed modest improvements in attendance.
  • Text messaging (SMS) was the most cost-effective reminder method among the three.
  • Limited data exist for electronic mail; open-access scheduling requires further research.

Conclusions:

  • Text messaging is a highly cost-effective strategy for reducing patient no-shows.
  • Healthcare providers should consider text messaging for appointment reminders.
  • Further research is needed on electronic mail and open-access scheduling effectiveness.
