Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze trends in oral contraceptive use, including progestogen-only pills, among Danish women from 1998 to 2010.
  • To detail oral contraceptive use patterns in 2010.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of annual cross-sectional prescription data from the Danish National Registry of Medicinal Products Statistics.
  • Study population included Danish women aged 10-49 years.
  • Data covered the period from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2010.

Main Results:

  • Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) with 20 μg estrogen increased to 46% market share by 2010, while those with 30-40 μg estrogen decreased to 50%.
  • Progestogen-only pills constituted 4% of use.
  • Pills containing newer progestogens like desogestrel and gestodene were commonly used, particularly by younger women.

Conclusions:

  • Low-dose combined oral contraceptives have progressively replaced medium-dose formulations.
  • Younger women predominantly use oral contraceptives with newer progestogens (desogestrel, gestodene, drospirenone, cyproteroneacetate).
  • There is a need for low-dose oral contraceptives with first and second-generation progestogens in the Scandinavian market.
