Preventive cardiology fellowships are not formally recognized, but 15 non-accredited programs exist nationwide. This study identifies these training opportunities and highlights variations in their structure and content.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Medicine
- Medical Education
Background:
- Preventive cardiology lacks formal recognition as a subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
- Numerous non-accredited fellowship programs exist across the United States.
- A centralized resource for identifying these programs is currently unavailable, necessitating extensive searches.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify all current preventive cardiology fellowship programs in the United States.
- To describe the fundamental structure, responsibilities, and faculty of these programs.
Main Methods:
- Comprehensive internet searches were conducted.
- Key national organizations were contacted for information.
- Networking through institutions likely to host fellowships was employed.
Main Results:
- Fifteen programs offering subspecialty training in preventive cardiology were identified.
- Significant variability exists among programs regarding style, structure, duties, clinical time, duration, and hosting departments.
Conclusions:
- A comprehensive list of current preventive cardiology fellowship programs was compiled.
- The findings have implications for the future development of formal subspecialty education in preventive cardiology.
