Background:

  • The specific role of Interleukin-17 (IL-17) in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains debated.
  • Pathological aging is associated with increased CVD risk and altered inflammatory profiles.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of IL-17 in cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis in elderly individuals.
  • To determine if IL-17 levels differ between elderly patients with CVD and healthy controls.
  • To explore the correlation between IL-17 levels and key biochemical markers of cardiovascular risk.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted on subjects over 65 years old.
  • Included 40 patients with cardiovascular disorders and 10 healthy volunteers.
  • Measured serum IL-17, total cholesterol, and triglycerides using biochemical assays.

Main Results:

  • Significantly elevated serum IL-17 levels were observed in patients with cardiovascular disorders compared to healthy controls (p<0.001).
  • IL-17 levels showed a significant positive correlation with serum total cholesterol (p=0.033) and triglycerides (p=0.043) in the patient group.
  • No significant correlation between IL-17 and these biochemical parameters was found in the control group.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated IL-17 levels are associated with cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis in the elderly.
  • IL-17 may serve as a potential biomarker for cardiovascular risk in pathological aging.
  • Further research into the therapeutic potential of targeting IL-17 in aging-related cardiovascular conditions is warranted.
