Cancer Stem Cells and Tumor Maintenance02:40

Cancer Stem Cells and Tumor Maintenance

Early diagnosis and treatment can often cure cancer. However, even with treatment, residual cells called cancer stem cells (CSC) might remain, often causing tumor recurrence. These cancer stem cells possess the potential for self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation and are often responsible for the therapeutic resistance displayed in most cancers.
Cancer stem cells are thought to originate from tissue-specific normal stem cells or progenitor cells. The normal stem cells usually reside in...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Cancer Biology
  • Cell Biology

Background:

  • Cancer stem cells (CSCs), also known as tumour-initiating cells (TICs), are a significant focus in cancer research.
  • CSCs are characterized by their rarity, quiescence, self-renewal capacity, and role in maintaining tumor growth and heterogeneity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the biological properties of CSCs.
  • To highlight the relevance of CSCs in cancer therapy.
  • To describe essential methodologies for CSC identification.

Main Methods:

  • Protocols for identifying CSCs from primary tumor samples.
  • Focus on glioblastoma, sarcoma, lung, and breast cancer models.

Main Results:

  • Detailed description of established CSC identification protocols.
  • Emphasis on the practical application of these methods in diverse cancer types.

Conclusions:

  • A comprehensive understanding of CSC biology and identification is vital for advancing cancer research.
  • Effective therapeutic strategies against cancer require targeting CSCs.
  • The described protocols offer a foundation for identifying CSCs and developing novel treatments.
