People often overweight evidence that is present over evidence that is absent when evaluating hypotheses. This study found that using substitutive features and explicit probabilities can reduce this feature-positive effect in decision-making.
Area of Science:
- Cognitive Psychology
- Decision Science
- Behavioral Economics
Background:
- The feature-positive effect describes the tendency for people to rely more on the presence of features than their absence when evaluating hypotheses.
- This cognitive bias can impact decision-making accuracy in various contexts.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate moderators of the feature-positive effect in hypothesis evaluation.
- To examine the influence of feature substitutability and probabilistic information presentation on this effect.
Main Methods:
- Three studies utilized abstract materials to test the feature-positive effect.
- Nonsubstitutive and substitutive features were employed to assess their impact.
- Probabilistic information, including clue occurrence and complement probabilities, was presented to participants.
Main Results:
- The feature-positive effect was observed regardless of feature type (nonsubstitutive vs. substitutive).
- Substitutive features, particularly when presented with explicit probabilities, demonstrated a debiasing effect.
- Participant sensitivity to clue rarity decreased with substitutive features, mitigating the feature-positive effect in specific scenarios.
Conclusions:
- The feature-positive effect is robust across different feature types but can be moderated.
- Explicit presentation of probabilistic information and the use of substitutive features can enhance hypothesis evaluation accuracy.
- Understanding these moderators is crucial for improving decision-making processes.
