[Mature eggs from primordial follicles in vitro--a challenge in the near future]

In vitro maturation of eggs from frozen-preserved tissue would be an important infertility therapy for women, whose eggs have been destroyed during cancer treatment. If there is a risk of presence of malignant cells in the tissue, it cannot be transferred back to the woman. Almost full-sized eggs are obtained in ovarian tissue culture by abolishing inhibition of the activation of ovarian follicles and by adding growth-regulating growth factors and hormones. Their final maturation in the subsequent culture and fertilization will hopefully be successful in the near future.
