Summary

Robotic colorectal surgery is a safe and feasible option, overcoming laparoscopic surgery limitations. Further prospective studies are needed to fully define its role in colorectal procedures.

Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Robotics

Background:

  • Laparoscopic surgery has limitations in colorectal procedures.
  • Robotic technology is an emerging field in surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a comprehensive data analysis of robotic technology in colorectal surgery.
  • To review the available literature from 2000 to 2011.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic search of electronic databases.
  • Analysis of studies reporting outcomes of robotic colorectal surgery.

Main Results:

  • 41 studies including 1681 patients were reviewed.
  • 0 mortality and 191 total complications reported in short-term outcomes.
  • Pathological results were not consistently reported across studies.
