Summary

Subitizing, the rapid enumeration of small quantities, is not automatic. This study shows that while subitizing is distinct from counting, it requires conscious attention, challenging traditional views.

  • Counting involves slower, attention-demanding enumeration of larger sets.
  • Prior research questioned the preattentive nature of subitizing, but automaticity remains untested.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To empirically test whether numerosities within the subitizing range are automatically accessed.
  • To investigate the distinction between subitizing and counting processes.
  • To determine if subitizing is an automatic or non-automatic cognitive process.

Main Methods:

  • Three experiments used visual search tasks with distractor dots of varying set sizes.
  • Participants performed target detection with and without explicit instructions to enumerate distractors.
  • Reaction time gradients for subitizing and counting ranges were analyzed.
