Background:

Active support is recognized for enhancing participation and quality of life in individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Limited research exists on the broader impact of active support beyond participation and quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the effects of implementing person-centred active support.
To explore impacts on various outcome measures for individuals with severe and profound intellectual disabilities.

Main Methods:

Observational methodology was employed.
Staff-rated measures were utilized.
The study focused on 30 individuals with severe and profound intellectual disabilities in group homes.

Main Results:

Significant increases in the amount and quality of assistance provided.
Significant improvements in engagement, participation, and choice-making opportunities.
A significant reduction in challenging behaviors, notably self-stimulatory behaviors.

Conclusions:

Findings highlight the multifaceted benefits of active support.
Implications for enhancing support practices and directing future research are discussed.
