Background:

  • Skin aging is a complex process influenced by intrinsic (chronological) and extrinsic (photo-aging) factors.
  • These factors lead to visible changes such as wrinkles, sagging, and textural alterations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare the histological changes in sun-exposed versus sun-protected skin across a wide age range.
  • To elucidate the structural and cellular modifications associated with chronological and photo-induced skin aging.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 45 skin biopsy samples from both sun-exposed and sun-protected areas.
  • Histological examination to assess epidermal thickness, cellular layers, keratohyaline granules, dermoepidermal junction, dermal elastotic material, inflammatory infiltrate, fibrous trabeculae, and hypodermal thickness.

Main Results:

  • Younger skin exhibits greater epidermal thickness and more cellular layers.
  • Older skin shows increased keratohyaline granules, flattened dermoepidermal junction, pronounced dermal elastotic material, and thickened fibrous trabeculae.
