Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Nuclear Medicine

Background:

  • Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) is primarily palliative.
  • Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) present challenges for complete surgical resection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the neoadjuvant potential of PRRT in managing NETs.
  • To review recent evidence on PRRT for tumor size reduction prior to surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Review of recently published manuscripts on PRRT for NETs.
  • Analysis of outcomes in patients treated with somatostatin analogs labeled with beta emitters.

Main Results:

  • PRRT demonstrated tumor size reduction in a subset of NET patients.
  • Successful surgical intervention (partial or total excision) was achieved post-PRRT, including liver metastases.

  • Tumor reduction correlated with prolonged overall survival.
  • Conclusions:

    • PRRT may serve as an effective neoadjuvant therapy for NETs.
    • This approach can facilitate tumor resection and improve survival.
    • Treatment protocols vary regarding isotopes, activity, and combination therapies.
