Background:

  • Rectal intussusception and rectal prolapse are conditions that can lead to defecation disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility of defecography in detecting rectal intussusception and rectal prolapse.
  • To correlate postoperative defecographic findings with patient symptom resolution.

Main Methods:

  • Pre- and postoperative defecograms were performed on 20 patients with rectal intussusception and 3 with rectal prolapse.
  • Eleven patients also had solitary rectal ulcers.
  • Defecography was repeated 2-3 months post-surgery and results compared with symptom status.

  • Postoperative defecograms were normal with symptom resolution in all rectal prolapse patients and 13/20 rectal intussusception patients.
  • Two patients with intussusception had persistent symptoms and abnormalities; two others had recurrence.
  • Nine of 11 patients with solitary rectal ulcers were cured, but two experienced recurrence of intussusception and lesions.

Conclusions:

  • Rectal intussusception and prolapse are significant contributors to defecation disorders.
  • Defecography is a valuable diagnostic tool for these conditions.
  • Solitary rectal ulcer presence/absence correlated with postoperative symptoms.
