Background:

  • Investigating the long-term metabolic and psychosocial impact of sensor-augmented pump (SAP) therapy in adults with type 1 diabetes.
  • Assessing outcomes 36 months after initiating SAP therapy.

Observation:

  • A cohort of 24 adults with type 1 diabetes from the Eurythmics Trial were followed.
  • 16 participants continued SAP use for over 70% of the time at 36 months.

Findings:

  • SAP therapy led to a sustained reduction in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) from 8.7% to 7.3% (P < 0.0001).
  • Significant improvements were observed in treatment satisfaction (DTSQs: +9.0, P < 0.0001) and reduced diabetes-related distress (PAID: -10.8, P = 0.013).
  • Hypoglycemia fear (HFS) showed a trend towards improvement (-5.5, P = 0.152).

Implications:

  • Sensor-augmented pump therapy demonstrates lasting benefits for type 1 diabetes management, extending beyond 36 months.
  • The findings support SAP as an effective long-term intervention for improving glycemic control and quality of life in T1D patients.
  • This study provides valuable long-term data, aligning with shorter-term findings from larger clinical trials.
