This pilot study explored using Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) to enhance nursing students' clinical judgment skills through computer-based simulations. Further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness.
Area of Science:
- Nursing Education
- Medical Simulation
Background:
- Expert clinical judgment develops from knowledge and experience.
- Nursing education uses simulated clinical experiences to augment learning.
- Computer-based simulations for individual learning are understudied.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine an educational intervention based on Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory (ELT).
- To determine the feasibility of a larger study on ELT's effectiveness in developing clinical judgment skills.
Main Methods:
- A pilot study was conducted.
- An educational intervention utilizing Kolb's ELT was implemented.
- Focus on computer-based simulation for individual users.
Main Results:
- The study focused on feasibility for future research.
- Data on the effectiveness of ELT in enhancing clinical judgment was collected.
Conclusions:
- This pilot study provides a foundation for larger research.
- Investigating ELT's role in computer-based simulations is warranted to improve nursing education.
