Background:

Observation:

  • A 21-year-old male presented with an asthma attack.
  • Computed tomography (CT) revealed subcutaneous and mediastinal emphysema.
  • Incidental finding of epidural emphysema within the vertebral canal was noted on CT.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced epidural emphysema as a complication of his asthma attack.
  • Neurological examination was unremarkable, indicating no neurological deficit.
  • Complete recovery occurred within 10 days of symptom onset.

Implications:

  • Epidural emphysema is an exceptionally rare complication of asthma.
  • The generally benign nature of this complication may not warrant routine chest CT.
  • This case contributes to understanding the spectrum of asthma-related emphysematous complications.
