Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Anorectal melanoma is a rare primary malignancy.
  • Mucosal melanoma exhibits distinct biology and poorer prognosis than cutaneous melanoma.
  • Distant metastasis is the primary driver of morbidity and mortality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide an updated overview of anorectal mucosal melanoma.
  • To discuss the current state-of-the-art management strategies.
  • To illustrate a multimodal treatment approach using a patient case.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review on anorectal mucosal melanoma.
  • Discussion of surgical treatment controversies.
  • Presentation of a representative patient case.

Main Results:

  • Anorectal melanoma is uncommon but aggressive.
  • Surgery is the primary treatment modality.
  • Controversy persists regarding the extent of surgical resection.

Conclusions:

  • Anorectal mucosal melanoma requires a multimodal management approach.
  • Further research is needed to define optimal surgical strategies.
  • Early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment are crucial for improved outcomes.
