Negative affect (NA) and high perceptual load impair spatial perception similarly. Both states reduce precise spatial localization of peripheral stimuli, suggesting attention and affective state dynamically shape visual abilities.
Area of Science:
- Cognitive Neuroscience
- Visual Perception
Background:
- Electrophysiology shows perceptual load and negative affect (NA) induce similar early attention gating effects.
- These effects modulate the processing of peripheral stimuli in early visual areas.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate if perceptual load and NA cause comparable behavioral changes in spatial perception.
- To determine if these effects impact spatial localization abilities at the behavioral level.
Main Methods:
- Participants performed a spatial localization task under varying perceptual load conditions (high vs. low).
- Transient negative affect was induced in a separate participant group for comparison.
- Eye movements were monitored to ensure no systematic gaze shifts to peripheral stimuli.
Main Results:
- High perceptual load impaired precise spatial localization of peripheral textures compared to low load.
- Coarse spatial encoding remained unaffected by load under neutral affect.
- Induced NA decreased localization performance even under low perceptual load.
Conclusions:
- Spatial perception is dependent on attention and affective state, with NA dynamically shaping abilities similar to perceptual load.
- Both NA and perceptual load can impair spatial localization, though potentially via distinct neural networks.

Negative Symptoms
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia manifest as deficits in normal emotional and behavioral functioning, profoundly impacting daily life. Individuals with schizophrenia often display a flat affect, characterized by a near-total absence of emotional expression,...
