  • Launching actions, which involve a propulsive phase, may uniquely influence affordance perception.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how launching actions affect the perception of action possibilities (affordances).
  • To determine if action familiarity or the action's launching nature is responsible for perception deficits.
  • To examine the impact of brief action experience on correcting affordance perception.

Main Methods:

  • Experiment 1: Participants judged the largest gap they could cross via leaping, arm-swinging, or crawling before and after performing each action.
  • Experiment 2: Participants judged affordances for non-launching actions (stepping, reaching) to isolate the effect of launching.
  • Utilized verbal judgments of maximum gap-crossing ability.

Main Results:

  • Launching actions (leaping, arm-swinging) led to significant underestimation of abilities compared to non-launching actions (crawling).
  • Action familiarity did not mitigate the underestimation caused by launching actions.
  • Post-action experience partially corrected the underestimation for launching actions, improving affordance perception.

Conclusions:

  • The act of launching, not familiarity, causes a deficit in perceiving affordances.
  • Even brief experience with an action can improve the accuracy of judging one's capabilities.
