    Background:

    • Residents-as-Teachers (RATs) programs enhance trainee teaching skills.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To adapt a commercial web-based system for maintaining resident teaching skills through reflection and deliberate practice.
    • To assess the system's effectiveness in preventing skill deterioration and providing program improvement insights.

    Main Methods:

    • Ten first-year Ob-Gyn residents participated in a RATs program and used a web-based evaluation system for self-assessment and student feedback.
    • Residents' teaching skills were compared to historical controls using an Objective Structured Teaching Examination (OSTE).
    • Qualitative analysis of resident and student comments identified teaching challenges and areas for program improvement.

    Main Results:

    • The intervention group significantly outperformed the control group on the OSTE (81±8 vs. 74±7; P=.05).
    • Resident self-assessments were consistently lower than student evaluations in 3 of 6 skills (P<.05).

    • A novel electronic web-based system effectively maintains resident teaching skills from an Ob-Gyn RATs program.
