Abstract:
In the title salt, C10H10N2(2+)·2C7H4NS2(-), the complete 4,4'-bipyridine-1,1'-diium dication is generated by a center of symmetry. In the crystal, N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds are observed between the cations and anions.

Birch reduction uses solvated electrons as reducing agents. The reaction converts benzene to 1,4-cyclohexadiene. The reaction proceeds by the transfer of a single electron to the ring to form a benzene radical anion.
