Summary

Ultrasonography and sestamibi scintigraphy are accurate for locating parathyroid adenomas in primary hyperparathyroidism. Combining both imaging methods improves localization accuracy for surgical planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography and 99m technetium sestamibi scintigraphy for parathyroid adenoma localization.
  • To compare the efficacy of ultrasonography and sestamibi scintigraphy in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.
  • To assess the combined utility of both imaging modalities for preoperative localization.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 80 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and elevated serum calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH).
  • Ultrasonography and sestamibi scintigraphy results were compared with surgical findings.
  • Statistical analysis, including student's t-test, was used to compare variables like serum calcium, PTH levels, and adenoma weight.

Main Results:

  • Ultrasonography detected enlarged parathyroid glands in 76.3% of patients (sensitivity 83.5%, PPV 89.7%).
