Nursing students gained experience in integrated care through a pilot clinical rotation. However, specialized healthcare models may limit the effectiveness of single-course approaches to holistic patient care.
Area of Science:
- Nursing Education
- Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing
- Integrated Patient Care
Background:
- Baccalaureate nursing programs face challenges in preparing students for complex patient populations.
- Educators sought a holistic approach to patient care, integrating mental and physical health needs.
- A pilot project was designed to address the gap in training for students caring for patients with comorbidities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe a pilot clinical rotation for undergraduate nursing students.
- To assess the mental health needs of patients with medical comorbidities on medical/surgical units.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of a single-course approach to integrated care.
Main Methods:
- A 24-hour voluntary clinical experience was implemented for psychiatric-mental health nursing students.
- Students focused on assessing and addressing mental health needs in patients on medical/surgical units.
- The pilot project aimed to provide a more holistic approach to patient care.
Main Results:
- Student participation in the pilot project provided valuable clinical experience.
- Evaluation suggested that the existing specialized healthcare model presents limitations.
- A single course approach may not fully prepare students for integrated care delivery.
Conclusions:
- The pilot project highlighted the need for innovative educational strategies in nursing.
- Integrated care requires addressing both mental and physical health within the healthcare system.
- Current educational models may need restructuring to support comprehensive, holistic patient care.

Physicians
The physician's primary responsibility is to diagnose illness and direct the medical or surgical treatment of the condition. The authority to admit patients to a healthcare agency or institution and practice care within that setting is granted to physicians by the healthcare agency or institution itself.
