Summary

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of bacterial lysates as a therapeutic or preventive measure for respiratory tract infections.
  • To assess the impact of bacterial lysates on serum immunoglobulin levels in patients with recurrent respiratory infections and/or asthma.

Main Methods:

  • A 2-year observational study involving 332 patients with or without bronchial asthma and recurrent respiratory tract infections.
  • Patients received bacterial lysate therapy during the second year, with outcomes analyzed using a scoring method.
  • Serum immunoglobulin levels (IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE) were measured before and after oral immunotherapy in a subset of patients.

Main Results:

  • Approximately two-thirds of patients showed improvement, with a significant reduction in respiratory infections from 2.14 to 1.08 per patient (p < 0.001).
  • Oral immunotherapy with bacterial lysates led to a significant increase in IgA levels in patients with initially low serum IgA.
  • Dosage adjustment of bacterial lysates was effective in increasing IgA levels in non-responsive patients.

Conclusions:

  • Bacterial lysates represent a promising therapeutic and preventive strategy for respiratory tract infections in patients with or without bronchial asthma.
  • Oral immunotherapy with bacterial lysates can modulate immunoglobulin levels, particularly IgA, in relevant patient populations.
