Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether co-occurring insomnia (INS) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an epiphenomenon of OSA or an independent disorder.
  • To compare the clinical presentation of patients with CIO to those with OSA alone and INS alone.

Main Methods:

  • Archival analysis of 299 patients (94 OSA, 97 INS, 108 CIO) from a sleep disorders center database.
  • Incomplete factorial design crossing OSA (present/absent) with INS (present/absent).
  • Comparison of groups based on polysomnography (PSG), sleep patterns, sleep stages, sleep pathology, and self-reported sleep concerns and daytime functioning.

  • These findings support the view that INS with co-occurring OSA is an independent disorder.
  • It is hypothesized that OSA may initially trigger INS, which then becomes self-sustaining through sleep concerns and compensatory behaviors.
