Summary
Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare, benign bone lesions. This report details the first known case of an ABC in the middle turbinate, treated successfully with endoscopic surgery.
Area of Science:
- Otolaryngology
- Pathology
- Oncology
Background:
- Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign, locally destructive bone lesion.
- Typically affects the younger population with an incidence of 0.14/100,000.
- Characterized by hemorrhagic, septated fluid content, commonly found in long bone metaphyses.
Observation:
- This study reports a rare case of an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) occurring in the middle turbinate.
- This represents an atypical location, as ABCs are seldom found in the skull and have no prior documented occurrence in the middle turbinate.
Findings:
- The patient with a middle turbinate ABC underwent successful treatment via endoscopic surgery.
- This approach highlights the efficacy of minimally invasive techniques for managing rare head and neck bone pathologies.
Implications:
- This case expands the known anatomical distribution of aneurysmal bone cysts.
- Endoscopic surgery presents a viable and effective treatment option for ABCs in challenging locations like the nasal cavity.
- Further research may elucidate the etiology and optimal management strategies for extraskeletal ABCs.
