Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmic optics
  • Optical metrology
  • Biomedical engineering

Background:

  • Accurate characterization of intraocular lenses (IOLs) is crucial for refractive surgery outcomes.
  • Existing methodologies, such as the ANSI Z80.30 Standard, can be complex and time-consuming.
  • There is a need for simplified yet comprehensive IOL characterization techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce an alternative optical setup employing a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor for IOL characterization.
  • To simplify the process of obtaining complete IOL optical property data.
  • To reduce the number of measurement steps required for IOL analysis.

Main Methods:

  • The proposed methodology was developed based on the ANSI Z80.30 Standard.
  • A Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor was integrated into an optical setup for IOL measurements.

  • Seven spherical and three toric IOLs were tested using both the alternative method and commercial equipment.
  • Main Results:

    • The alternative methodology provided satisfactory measurements for IOL dioptric power, spherical aberration, cylindrical power, and Modulation Transfer Functions (MTF).
    • Spherical IOLs showed dioptric errors exceeding standard tolerance, likely due to manufacturing deviations.
    • All toric IOL cylindrical power measurements were within the ANSI Z80.30 Standard tolerance.

    Conclusions:

    • The alternative methodology enables complete IOL characterization with fewer steps than the ANSI Z80.30 Standard.
    • The method yields satisfactory results for key optical parameters, including power, aberration, and MTF.
    • While MTF measurements were not conducted in a model eye, they offer valuable insights into ophthalmic lens design quality.
