Passive smoking exposure in children is linked to increased pain perception during medical procedures. This study found higher pain scores in children exposed to secondhand smoke compared to those not exposed.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Environmental Health
- Pain Management
Background:
- Limited research exists on the association between passive smoking and children's pain perception.
- Understanding this link is crucial for pediatric healthcare and public health initiatives.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between passive smoking and pain perception in children.
- To determine if exposure to secondhand smoke influences pain sensitivity during medical procedures.
Main Methods:
- A single-center study involving 100 children undergoing venous catheterization.
- Participants were divided into two groups: 50 exposed to passive smoking and 50 unexposed.
- Exclusion criteria included chronic diseases, neurological/psychiatric conditions, communication issues, and recent analgesic use. Pain was measured using the Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale (WBFPS).
Main Results:
- A statistically significant difference in pain perception was observed between the two groups.
- Children exposed to passive smoking reported significantly higher WBFPS scores during catheterization compared to the non-exposed group (p=0.00).
Conclusions:
- Passive smoking demonstrably increases pain perception in children.
- Findings suggest that reducing children's exposure to secondhand smoke may mitigate pain during medical interventions.
