Summary

Background:

Speech perception in noise is a significant challenge for many individuals.
Both behavioral and physiological measures are used to study auditory processing.
Physiological measures, like CAEPs, may explain individual differences in noise perception.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the effects of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and signal level on auditory processing.
To determine the predictive power of cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) for speech-in-noise abilities.
To explore the relationship between electrophysiological and behavioral measures in normal-hearing young adults.

Main Methods:

Utilized electrophysiology and behavioral testing in 15 young normal-hearing individuals.
Measured responses across varying signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and signal levels.
Employed correlation and regression analyses to link CAEPs with speech perception outcomes.

Main Results:

Significant main effects of SNR were observed for both electrophysiology and speech perception.
Signal level effects were primarily evident in behavioral speech testing.
Electrophysiology and behavioral measures demonstrated a strong correlation.
N1 latency and N1 amplitude of CAEPs were the best predictors of speech-in-noise performance.

Conclusions:

Sensitivity to SNR cues in noise can mask the encoding of signal level cues.
Cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) show strong predictive potential for speech-in-noise understanding.
Future research should examine these relationships in populations with hearing impairments or age-related deficits.
