Heart failure in children in tropical regions
Insights
Pediatric heart failure is rising in tropical nations due to infectious causes, differing from temperate regions. This review highlights key etiologies in children within these tropical areas.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Cardiology
- Tropical Medicine
Background:
- Rising pediatric population in tropical countries correlates with increased incidence of heart failure.
- Etiology of pediatric heart failure in tropical regions significantly differs from temperate climates.
- Infectious diseases are a predominant cause of heart failure in children in tropical areas.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review and summarize the primary causes of heart failure in the pediatric population residing in tropical regions.
- To provide insights into the specific etiological factors prevalent in tropical pediatric cardiology.
- To inform healthcare providers about the unique challenges in diagnosing and managing pediatric heart failure in the tropics.
Main Methods:
- Comprehensive literature review of studies on pediatric heart failure in tropical regions.
- Analysis of etiological data from published case reports, cohort studies, and reviews.
- Synthesis of information focusing on infectious and non-infectious causes.
Main Results:
- Infectious etiologies, such as viral myocarditis and rheumatic heart disease, are leading causes of pediatric heart failure.
- Congenital heart defects and cardiomyopathies also contribute, but infectious causes show higher prevalence.
- Geographical variations in causative agents and disease patterns were observed.
Conclusions:
- Infectious diseases represent a critical and distinct etiological category for pediatric heart failure in tropical settings.
- Understanding these specific causes is essential for effective prevention, diagnosis, and management strategies.
- Further research is warranted to address the burden of infectious heart failure in children in the tropics.
Abstract:
With the ever increasing younger population in tropical countries, the number of children with heart failure is increasing. However, the etiology of heart failure in this region varies considerably from that in the temperate region, with infectious causes leading the list. In this review, we have summarized the important causes of heart failure seen in the pediatric population in tropical regions.
