Facial shape differences exist between heterosexual and homosexual men, with homosexual men displaying a mosaic of masculine and feminine features. These morphological variations, however, did not accurately predict sexual orientation judgments.
Area of Science:
- Human Morphology
- Sexual Orientation Studies
- Facial Analysis
Background:
- Previous research indicates somatic trait differences between homosexual and heterosexual men.
- Lay perception accurately attributes sexual orientation from facial images, suggesting facial cues exist.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate facial shape differences between heterosexual and homosexual men.
- To determine if self-reported sexual orientation correlates with perceived sexual orientation and masculinity-femininity from facial images.
Main Methods:
- Geometric morphometrics was employed to analyze facial shape variations.
- Independent raters assessed sexual orientation and masculinity-femininity from standardized facial photographs.
Main Results:
- Significant facial shape differences were identified between homosexual and heterosexual men.
- Homosexual men exhibited wider, shorter faces with more massive jaws, a mix of feminine and masculine traits.
- Despite shape differences, attributed sexual orientation did not predict self-reported orientation; homosexual men were rated as more masculine.
Conclusions:
- Facial morphology differences between homosexual and heterosexual men do not solely reflect femininity.
- Stereotypical associations between feminine appearance and homosexuality may bias sexual orientation judgments.
