The Professional Nurse

6.5K
Professional nurses are not limited to bedside care and are taking roles of greater responsibility. A nurse should have a knowledge-based practice, including personal, theoretical, procedural, cultural, and reflexive knowledge. Additionally, nurses must be competent in cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and ethical/legal skills. Some of the best attributes of successful nurses include the following:
Communication skills: These are critical characteristics, especially speaking and listening.

Methods of Documentation II: POMR

1.5K
The Problem-Oriented Medical Record (POMR) revolutionized medical record-keeping by introducing a systematic approach focusing on the patient's problems rather than merely listing symptoms. Dr. Lawrence Weed's introduction of this method in the 1960s marked a significant advancement in medical documentation. The POMR framework consists of four key components: the database, problem list, plan of care, and progress notes.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation V: Advanced Airway Management Techniques

964
Airway management is essential in emergency and surgical medicine, ensuring ventilation and oxygenation in patients who cannot maintain their own airway. Clinicians use a range of techniques and devices to secure the airway, depending on the patient’s condition and the clinical context. Key methods include endotracheal intubation, rapid sequence intubation (RSI), supraglottic airway devices, and advanced visualization aids. In cases where these approaches fail, surgical airway...

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Advanced Practice Nursing
  • International Medical Graduates

Background:

  • Many Filipino physicians pursue Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees and registered nurse licensure to work in the US.
  • Some physicians, despite preferring medical practice, remain in nursing roles after emigration.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To articulate lessons learned from an accelerated Master of Science in Nursing program.
  • To evaluate the transition of foreign-trained medical doctors with BSNs into family nurse practitioner roles.

Main Methods:

  • A collaborative fast-track Master of Science in Nursing program was established in Fall 2006.
  • The program involved 76 graduates by 2010, with all passing the FNP national certification exam on the first attempt.

Main Results:

  • The program successfully prepared graduates for FNP certification.
  • Despite success, the program closed due to declining qualified applicants.

Conclusions:

  • Accelerated programs for medical doctors transitioning to nurse practitioners require careful curriculum design.
  • Consideration should be given to reinforcing core nursing subjects like physical assessment, pharmacology, and pathophysiology.
