Autofluorescence is a safe and effective method for detecting optic nerve head drusen (ONHD) in children. This technique accurately identified ONHD in 94% of cases, including hidden drusen.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Medical Imaging
- Pediatric Eye Care
Background:
- Optic nerve head drusen (ONHD) can mimic papilledema in children, necessitating accurate diagnostic methods.
- Pseudopapilledema evaluation requires differentiating true optic disc swelling from other conditions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of autofluorescence imaging for identifying optic nerve head drusen (ONHD) in pediatric patients.
- To determine the reliability of autofluorescence in detecting both visible and hidden ONHD.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study involving children under 18 with suspected pseudopapilledema.
- Comparison of autofluorescence imaging with B-scan ultrasonography as the gold standard.
- Masked analysis of autofluorescence images by three independent observers.
Main Results:
- Autofluorescence successfully identified ONHD in 94% of affected eyes (30/32).
- Detection rates were 100% for visible drusen and 92% for hidden drusen.
- High interobserver agreement (κ values ranging from 0.89 to 0.96) was observed.
Conclusions:
- Autofluorescence is a safe, rapid, and dependable tool for diagnosing ONHD in children.
- The technique offers high sensitivity for both apparent and non-apparent optic nerve head drusen.
- Autofluorescence imaging can aid in the accurate diagnosis of pediatric optic neuropathies.
