Interprofessional (IP) team training using crisis resource management (CRM) principles and high-fidelity human patient simulation (HFHPS) effectively improves teamwork and communication skills in healthcare students. Skills were retained well and improved with repeat training.

  • To evaluate the efficacy of crisis resource management (CRM) principles and high-fidelity human patient simulation (HFHPS).
  • To assess CRM and HFHPS for interprofessional (IP) team training.
  • To train undergraduate nursing, nurse anesthesia, medical, and respiratory therapy students.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental design was employed over one year.
  • Evaluated acquisition and retention of teamwork and communication skills.
  • Utilized a convenience sample of 92 students across two semesters.

Main Results:

  • Student scores for teamwork and communication skills significantly increased post-training.
  • Skills demonstrated good retention over time.
  • Repeat training in the spring semester reinforced any skill loss.

Conclusions:

  • Crisis resource management (CRM) principles combined with high-fidelity human patient simulation (HFHPS) are effective pedagogies.
