Teeth

2.2K
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Oral Pathology

Background:

  • Dentigerous cysts originate from follicular tissue around impacted lower third molars.
  • The association between dentigerous cysts and radiographically normal impacted lower third molars requires further investigation.
  • Oral surgeons need awareness regarding prophylactic removal of impacted third molars.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of dentigerous cysts in radiographically normal impacted lower third molars.
  • To highlight the importance of prophylactic removal of impacted third molars.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involved 30 patients with impacted lower third molars indicated for extraction.
  • Follicular tissue surrounding the impacted teeth underwent histopathologic examination.
  • Radiographic assessment considered pericoronal space < 2.5 mm; slides were reviewed by two oral pathologists.

Main Results:

  • Histopathologic analysis revealed dentigerous cysts in 7 out of 30 follicular tissue samples.
  • The association was statistically significant (P < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • A statistically significant incidence of dentigerous cysts is associated with radiographically normal impacted lower third molars.
  • Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons should consider histopathologic evaluation and radiographic diagnosis for impacted lower third molars.
  • Prophylactic extraction of normal impacted lower third molars is a viable treatment option.
