    Taurine

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Neurochemistry

    Background:

    • Taurine is an amino acid found in the brain.
    • Its role as a neurotransmitter in the hippocampus is debated.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the localization of cysteine sulfinic acid decarboxylase (CSAD), the taurine synthetic enzyme.
    • To examine the postsynaptic action of taurine in the CA1 region of the rat hippocampus.

    Main Methods:

    • Immunocytochemistry (light and electron microscopy) to localize CSAD.
    • Electrophysiology on in vitro hippocampal slices to study taurine's effects.

    Main Results:

    • CSAD-immunoreactivity was found in hippocampal basket cells and around pyramidal cells.
    • Electrophysiology showed taurine inhibits pyramidal neurons via chloride conductance.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Immunocytochemistry suggested taurine is a neurotransmitter in few neurons, with other functions in most.
  • Conclusions:

    • Electrophysiological data support a neurotransmitter role for taurine.
    • Immunocytochemical data indicate a limited neurotransmitter role for taurine in the hippocampus.
    • Most CSAD-positive neurons likely utilize taurine for non-neurotransmitter functions.
