Summary

This case report highlights a rare instance of multiple paragangliomas in a young girl. Early diagnosis and surgical removal of these rare neuroendocrine tumors are crucial for preventing severe complications.

Background:

Paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors originating from neural crest cells.
Multicentricity is more common in patients with a familial history of these tumors.
They typically arise in extra-adrenal paraganglia, often in the retroperitoneal space.

Purpose of the Study:

To report a rare case of multiple paragangliomas in a young patient.
To emphasize the importance of early recognition and intervention for paragangliomas.
To illustrate diagnostic and histopathological findings in a complex case.

Main Methods:

Case report of a young girl presenting with symptoms suggestive of paraganglioma.
Diagnostic imaging using Contrast Enhanced CT Abdomen.
Biochemical analysis of urinary vanillylmandelic acid levels.
Surgical excision and histopathological examination of the tumors.

Main Results:

The patient presented with throbbing headache, indicative of a potential paraganglioma.
CT scans revealed two large, irregular, intensely enhancing mass lesions in the retroperitoneum.
Elevated urinary vanillylmandelic acid levels supported the diagnosis.
Histopathology confirmed the presence of multiple paragangliomas.

Conclusions:

Early identification of paraganglioma symptoms like headache and palpitations is vital.
Prompt surgical intervention for multiple paragangliomas can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality.
This case underscores the importance of considering rare diagnoses in pediatric patients with suggestive symptoms.
