A dog with a persistent skin mass was diagnosed with Streptomyces cyaneus infection. This case highlights that Streptomyces, though rarely identified, can be a pathogenic cause of veterinary infections.

Background:

  • A nodular pyogranulomatous mass in an Australian Terrier was poorly responsive to antibiotics.
  • Initial suspicion of Actinomyces sp. infection based on Gram-positive filamentous organisms.

Observation:

  • The dog showed temporary improvement with potentiated sulfonamides.
  • Mass recurrence occurred 5 months later, leading to euthanasia.

Findings:

  • Streptomyces cyaneus was cultured from the mass and confirmed via 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing.
  • Histopathology confirmed the organism within the lesion.

Implications:

  • Invasive Streptomyces infections are rare in animals, often mistaken for contaminants.
  • This case demonstrates Streptomyces as a pathogenic agent in veterinary medicine, not to be dismissed as contamination.
